Contour Mobile Offline Observations

With more and more observations created on Contour mobile, and observation types now available for all SFI actions, being able to collect evidence wherever you are is increasingly important. Recognising this, we are releasing full offline functionality for viewing, creating and editing observation so that crop data and evidence collection is not impacted by poor connectivity.
New functionality

  • With offline observations enabled, observations can be created and updated whilst offline, including images and documents
  • Observation creations and updates can be synced to the web once connectivity resumes when the app is open. Observations won’t sync unless the app is open
  • Any observations changes that are made offline and not yet synchronised are marked with an icon which disappears once synchronisation has occurred:
  • Deleting observations when offline is not currently possible
  • Un-synchronised data will be lost if you log out of the app

This release also includes the fix for SFI observations, so they now show on mobile.

How to use offline functionalities in the app

To create an observation offline we recommend first either setting the farm up so its data is downloaded via the ‘manage data’ option, or viewing the create observation page at least once before going offline. This will ensure the observation types are available offline (one time action).

1. Enable access. This allows you to view map layers for selected farms. Use the dropdowns at the bottom of the page to select the date range for imagery that you want to see and the imagery types you want to view offline. Then select “Manage data” to choose the farms.

2. Enable observations. Enabling this toggle allows observations to be created offline and stored until synced to the web. It also enables downloading of observations for selected farms and caching their files when they are viewed (so they can be viewed later when offline).

3. Choose whether or not to automatically download observation photos and documents for offline viewing when observations are downloaded (either via the ‘manage data’ option or when a farm’s observations are viewed).

Clearing local storage will remove all cached and un-synced observations files from your phone, clearing up space*.
*  NB: this will currently break an unsynced observation as it will delete the file it is trying to upload and it will show the observation with an up-arrow which will not go away (observation details would be saved). Logging out and back in again will remove the up arrow.
