Soil Management Plans in Contour

Our aim for this tool has been to make it as simple as possible, utilising the data from within Contour. A soil management plan can now be created with just a few clicks per field.
After selecting the fields you want to feature in the SMP, Contour automatically populates the Crop, Slope, Soil type and Soil texture (plus organic matter data where available). Using this data, it automatically calculates the crop, erosion and runoff risks, meaning all you have to do is select the management proposals for each field.
Here’s how:

  • In Contour, select the SMP tool under the Environmental tab.
  • Select “Create plan”.
  • Name the plan and select a year.
  • The fields available then show, organised by farm. Fields without cropping are NOT available for plans: cropping must be added first.
  • The fields will be loaded into the next form, with Crop, Slope (degrees), Soil type and Soil texture automatically populated, along with Organic matter if soil data has been added. Apart from Crop, you can manually adjust these inputs if you wish.
  • Erosion, runoff and crop risks are then automatically calculated but you can adjust them if required.
  • Select the field features that apply to each field (Watercourses, Archaeology and Field Drainage)
  • Select the management proposals that will apply to that field for the selected year.
  • Add any additional comments, such as worm counts or soil assessment data.
  • Select Finish to create the plan.
  • The plan will appear in the list page, from where it can be viewed edited or deleted.
